“Do you know what most people ask me when I tell them what job I do?
‘Why outdoor furniture?’
Why not a sector that’s obviously ‘made’ for ‘designers’? Like cars, fashion or sofas? I mean, be honest, you’d probably come up with a few other examples of typical designer sectors if pushed … right?
But the answer lies in precisely this question, posed often enough. You see, gardens are still a tad ‘neglected’ by many, and I don’t mean the hedges don’t get trimmed, or that the unmown lawns are all overgrowing.
No, what I’m getting at is when you step out from a spectacular, a truly individual and tastefully furnished lounge, onto a terrace that looks as if it butts onto a different house. A tailor-made shelf in the living room, or a couch by God knows who with its specially flown-in cushions – bring them on! So what’s with the folding plastic chairs on the porch? And it’s precisely because so many people instantly think ‘cars’ when terms like design, individuality and unusual materials are bandied around, that what I’m trying to do with my line of work is to get ‘outdoor furniture’ linked to these ideas as well.
Which is how we get around to what I consider to be the ‘core’ of my work: keying in my ‘designs’ with your own individual ideas of what you’d like to see built. Because what turns out then is a tailor-made level of ‘outdoor living’ to match the quality of any other living area. And the nice thing is, you don’t have to fit in with the furniture, you let the furniture fit you. For instance, what good is a sofa with a deeper seating area to you if your legs aren’t all that long? Well, it’s exactly this close co-operation with clients, helping each-other to make the products work properly for them, that I really do enjoy the most about my work.
